General strategies for the IELTS

Strategies will be divided into the main four sections of the test:

A-Listening section:

1-Read th questions before the start of each section and highlight key words.

2-Check your spelling and grammar.

3-Look for synonyms of key words in questions.

4-Transfer answers quickly but carefully.

5-Don't listen for enjoyment-your purpose is to answer the questions only.

Important notes:

you should notice carefully writing capital or small letter.

B-Reading section:

1-Read the quetions first.

2-Go over the passage quickly and practise skimming and scanning.

3-Skimming means to read the passage quickly to get the general meaning, not the specific details.

4-Scanning means to read again more carefully trying to locate answers to the different questions.

5-Don't try to read every single word in the passage , and if you come across any new vocabulary, try to guess its meaning from the context in which it is used.

6-Pay special attention to key words in both the questions and the passage . You will be able to locate answers in the passage either before the key words or after them.

7-Also pay special attention to the topic sentence in each paragraph. the topic sentence usually contains a summary of the main idea of the paragraph, so it is important to locate it.It is usually located at the beginning of every paragraph, but in some cases you will locate it at the end or in the middle.

8-Also pay attention to these things:pictures ,numbers ,illustrations ,names ,titles ,headings ,and word in Italic.

9-Look for synonym in the reading passage of key words in questions.

10-Don't read for enjoyment- your purpose is to answer the questions only.

11-Read quickly many times ,which is more effective than reading slowly once.

C- Essay writing:

1-Pay attention to the layout of your piece of writing so that it looks well organized and divided into paragraphs and blocks.

2-A paragraph must deal with or cover only one main central idea.

3-Any piece of writing must have the following structure:

a-Introduction.

b-Body or Development

c-Conclusion.

4-Don't copy from the question ,but you can use the idea of the question and express it using your own words.

5-Make sure to leave a space between each paragraph and the text.

6-Follow this five steps strategy:

a-Analyze the quetion by reading it carefully and underlining key words in it.

b-Practise brainstorming and make notes.

c-Make a plan by thinking again and including the relevant notesand excluding the irrelevant ones (filter your notes)

d-Write your eassy.

e-Check for mistakes.

7- Avodi repetition and create variety by using :

a-Different vocabulary.

b-Different linking words and phrases.
